2 Corinthians 5:17 says:
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
If you haven't noticed already, this is the bible verse in the header of my blog! This verse is very dear to my heart. It also is super applicable to today's theme of daylight savings time. In Missouri we "Spring Forward" and set our clocks forward an hour every spring.
If anyone is in Christ
I was saved when I was eight, but I rededicated my life to God last summer during church camp. I plan on making a post about this soon, so look out for it! What it means to me to be in Christ is to believe with all your heart that he came to save you, and that he forgave you when you repented and trusted in him.
A sign of being saved is fellowship with god. As a believer, I am able to pray and he will hear me. Prayer is a conversation between you and God. He speaks to you in many ways, sometimes through the bible and sometimes through circumstances. When you sin and you don't repent, your fellowship is lost with Him. You are still saved, but it is harder to pray or to talk to him. But, there is hope for you. Once you are saved, you are always saved. When you repent, God welcomes you back with open arms. 1 John 1:9 says:
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
which means that our fellowship is restored once we turn away from our sins.
The old has gone, the new is here
I struggle with this part of the verse daily. I have a tendency to focus on the old days when things were less good. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for a long time. When I am stuck in those depressive spirals, I tend to only focus on the past.
But, through Jesus Christ I can move past this. He helps me focus on the new. He helps me focus on my bright future, and what I can do. He makes me excited to live. In the words of my Dad, "We remember the old things only because it helps us appreciate the new." meaning that we know we used to be in the wrong, but that only helps us see how much God has changed us.
What does this have to do with daylight savings time?
With spring comes all sorts of new birth. Birds come back, people start planting gardens, and the whole world comes alive. Baseball even comes back. This is what it is like when you accept Jesus. You become new, inside and out. The winter of the past is gone, and even if it comes back that doesn't mean that He has left you. Another thing that happens is the days get longer, and the light becomes more prevalent. This is true of your life when you accept Christ. You become the light for others to see.
Some people sell the idea that Christianity makes your life easier. This is false. Much like daylight savings time, Christianity does not make your life easier. When you spring forward in time, it is much much harder to get out of bed. That does not, however, mean that your life less good. With daylight savings time comes more light, and in return more time to get stuff done in your day. This is the same with being a Christian. Your days do not get easier, but they will become more worthwhile.
That’s so true - our lives are more complete and full in Him!
